It tracks the period from her tough beginnings as a dancer in late 70s New York to the early 90s days of the Blonde Ambition tour and her once-controversial Mapplethorpe-type book of photos entitled Sex. Its watchable enough, with some interesting things to say about Madonnas instinctive knack for appropriating a gay aesthetic and repurposing it for her own heterosexual spectacle, and then repaying the debt by becoming an outspoken advocate for HIV/Aids research.Yet the film can also feel breezy and glib. There is no mention of Madonnas appearances in movies such as Desperately Seeking Susan and Dick Tracy or indeed her appearance in David Mamets Speed-the-Plow on Broadway perhaps because these dont fit the legendary format (although Desperately Seeking Susan has its admirers). And there is something exasperating in the way the film wont reveal the exact dates and provenance of its audio; Madonna will sometimes speak about her past and her family in a British accent, showing that the interview comes from the later era of her marriage to Guy Ritchie, and sometimes her voice will switch back to her native Michigan. Its one for fans of the genre onlyThe easiest way to describe The Road Trip would be to call it the TV equivalent of an airport novel. Perhaps that is because it is. Beth OLeary has long kept the WH Smith industrial complex alive, with bestselling novels including The Flatshare, which sold more than 1m copies. That book was adapted into a six-part TV series in 2022, and followed two roommates thrust together by the fact that they rented the same bed cleverly twisting the hellscape that is the London rental market into the stuff of a fluffy romcom. This one follows Dylan and Addie, a pair of exes thrust together by the fact that they have to use the same method of transport to get to a wedding 1,000 miles away. Like a rat, a potential love affair is never more than 6ft away in OLearys world. This time, our star-crossed, claustrophobic pairing are Dylan and Addie, who are on their separate ways to the wedding of their friends Cherry and Krish. In the book, the nuptials were in Scotland. But this is TV, so it has been relocated to lush, mountainous Spain. Addie and her sister Deb plus an uninvited guest named Rodney are driving in a camper van from Bristol to catch a cross-channel ferry. Up the road, Dylan and his best mate, Marcus, are on their way to the airport, in a Porsche. Marcus (David Jonsson), in a role with shades of his much-missed Industry character Gus) crashes the Porsche his dads into Addies camper van. Although the RV sounded like a dying animal long before that, it becomes Dylan and Marcuss only hope for getting across the border, leaving our fivesome lumped together. One night at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, Hillary Clinton came with Madeleine Albright. They were both seated on time, but Bill Clinton and Chelsea, delayed by traffic, joined them in the middle of first act. Next day, I was eager to find out what the Clintons had been like. Judi had received them in her dressing room and been swept away by their charm. When I went to ask Maggie what she thought of them, she said she had refused to meet them. Japan's Breweries and Distilleries Celebrate UNESCO Heritage Listing
Japanese sake, one of the most well-known elements of Japanese cuisine, has a history that stretches back centuries, with regional varieties made all across the country. This fermented alcoholic beverage is made with rice, "koji" mold, and water. While seemingly simple, the techniques and conditions required to make Japanese sake are unique, leading to the Japanese government proposing "Traditional knowledge and skills of sake-making with koji mold in Japan" to be registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, which was approved on December 4 (December 5 JST). This includes not only Japanese sake, but also "shochu" and "awamori," and "mirin" cooking wine. Traditional knowledge and skills of sake-making with koji mold in Japan came to be thanks to the experienced, dedicated "toji" (chief sake maker) and "kurabito" (sake brewery worker) who use koji mold, adjust their brewing processes to work with different climates across Japan, and have passed down their techniques and skills over generations. The sake produced through these traditional methods has deep roots in Japanese society, playing a significant role in Japanese religious rituals, ceremonies such as weddings, and other parts of Japanese culture. The ingredient koji is also used to make miso, vinegar, and soy sauce, making it a crucial element of Japanese food culture and demonstrating the strong ties between sake making and traditional Japanese cuisine. It is expected that the new designation will make the rich history and culture of sake-making more well-known and appreciated worldwide. The deep history and masterful techniques and skills used to make Japanese sake make it a significant symbol of Japanese culture.
