UNESCO to add Japan sake-brewing to intangible heritage list An advisory panel to UNESCO has recommended Japan's traditional knowledge and skills for making sake and "shochu" distilled spirits be included in its Intangible Cultural Heritage list, putting their listing on course for formal endorsement later this year, Japan's culture agency said Tuesday. Once formally adopted by the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's intergovernmental committee session from Dec. 2 to 7 in Asuncion, Paraguay, they will become Japan's 23rd entry on the list. Read full story here

Ukraine confirms 1st engagement with N. Korea troops: S. Korea media Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov has confirmed his country's military has engaged for the first time with North Korean troops, South Korea's public broadcaster KBS reported Tuesday. Umerov told KBS in an interview on Monday local time that a "small-scale" engagement had taken place, without detailing when and where the fighting took place. North Korea launches short-range missiles ahead of U.S. election North Korea on Tuesday fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan, the Japanese Defense Ministry said, in a move that came just ahead of the U.S. presidential election and less than a week after an intercontinental ballistic missile launch. At least seven short-range missiles flew a distance of 400 kilometers with an altitude of up to about 100 km after they were fired from North Korea's west coast between around 7:30 a.m. and 7:39 a.m., the Japanese ministry said. Tokyo Stock Exchange extends trading hours for 1st time in 70 years The Tokyo Stock Exchange extended its regular trading hours by 30 minutes from Tuesday as part of its efforts to make the bourse more attractive to foreign investors. It is the first extension of trading hours in 70 years. Japan launches flagship H3 rocket carrying defense satellite Japan launched a flagship H3 rocket carrying a Defense Ministry communications satellite Monday, its third consecutive successful liftoff following a botched debut in 2023. The H3 series is the successor to the country's current mainstay H2A vehicle, which has supported Japan's space development for over 20 years and will be retired after a final launch, possibly by the end of March. Railway firm to deploy blade-resistant umbrellas against knife attacks A major train operator in western Japan will equip crew with blade-resistant umbrellas to help them quickly evacuate passengers in the event of a knife attack, JR West said. 33 changed gender in Japan without surgery after 2023 court ruling At least 33 individuals changed their legal gender in Japan without surgery this year since the Supreme Court ruled against a law requiring transgender people to remove their reproductive capabilities for such alteration, a survey by the top court showed Sunday. The data is the first comprehensive figure on gender changes since the top court declared in October last year that the controversial requirement was unconstitutional, as previous numbers were only based on individual reports. South Korea, U.S., Japan run joint air drills after North Korea ICBM launch South Korea's military said it held joint air drills Sunday with the United States and Japan, three days after North Korea fired an intercontinental ballistic missile that marked the longest-ever flight time for such a weapon from the country. Last Hong Kong colonial governor Patten among foreigners decorated in Japan Christopher Patten, Hong Kong's last British colonial governor who oversaw its handover to Chinese rule in 1997, is among the 87 foreigners recognized in this year's fall decorations for their notable contributions to Japan, the government said Sunday. TEPCO progressing in melted fuel extraction from Fukushima nuclear reactor The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex said Saturday it moved a tiny portion of melted fuel just outside a reactor container as part of its attempt to retrieve the debris for the first time since a nuclear disaster hit the plant over a decade ago.
