Bain Capital makes counteroffer to KKR's takeover bid for Fuji Soft - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- U.S. private investment firm Bain Capital has made a counteroffer of 600 billion yen ($4.1 billion) to Japanese systems developer Fuji Soft to outdo a takeover bid by fellow U.S. private equity firm KKR, Nikkei has learned.KKR announced in August that it intends to make a tender offer to acquire all the outstanding shares of Fuji Soft at 8,800 yen per share, making the total deal around 560 billion yen ($3.8 billion). Fuji Soft's management said it is in favor of the acquisition.

3,000-yr-old cedar toppled on typhoon-hit island in southwest Japan An iconic 3,000-year-old cedar on Yakushima Island in southwestern Japan has been toppled, likely due to strong winds brought by Typhoon Shanshan, local tour guides said Tuesday. The 26-meter-high cedar, named "Yayoisugi," with a trunk circumference of about 8 meters, was a key feature of the tourist site Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine. The guides found it collapsed on Saturday. Chinese state shipbuilders plan merger with eye on 'strong military' - Nikkei Asia HONG KONG -- Two listed Chinese state-owned shipbuilders announced Monday that they are preparing for a merger, a move that could end competition between them and help them better serve the military, while dealing with global vessel shortages.In separate but virtually identical filings to the Shanghai Stock Exchange on Monday night, China CSSC Holdings and China Shipbuilding Industry (CSICL) said they had signed an agreement of intent to merge earlier that day.
