TEPCO progressing in melted fuel extraction from Fukushima nuclear reactor The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex said Saturday it moved a tiny portion of melted fuel just outside a reactor container as part of its attempt to retrieve the debris for the first time since a nuclear disaster hit the plant over a decade ago. Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. plans to check the radiation level of the 5-millimeter-size debris, possibly on Tuesday, to determine if it can be recovered. Read full story here

Last Hong Kong colonial governor Patten among foreigners decorated in Japan Christopher Patten, Hong Kong's last British colonial governor who oversaw its handover to Chinese rule in 1997, is among the 87 foreigners recognized in this year's fall decorations for their notable contributions to Japan, the government said Sunday. Patten, 80, who was the territory's governor from 1992 until its return to China, went on to serve as the chancellor of the University of Oxford from 2003 to 2024. Read full story here

Nov. 2 heavy rain halted shinkansen bullet trains, hit 139,000 people Heavy rain canceled a total of 88 Sanyo Shinkansen bullet train services on Saturday and delayed 229 by up to around six hours, affecting about 139,300 people, the operator said. JR West said Sunday that rain gauges in some sections had reached their maximum level for safe operation between Shin-Osaka and Hakata in western Japan in the morning the previous day, adding services resumed later after safety checks were completed. Figure skating: Higuchi wins silver, Sumiyoshi bronze at France GP Japan's Wakaba Higuchi topped the free skate but finished runner-up to overall women's individual winner Amber Glenn of the United States at figure skating's Grand Prix de France on Saturday. Japan trade houses push for locally farmed salmon as imports to peak Major Japanese trade houses, led by Marubeni Corp., have been pushing for the land-based farming of salmon, a popular type of sushi and sashimi, in Japan, as supply from Norway is starting to peak. In October, Marubeni started selling salmon to supermarkets and fishmongers that was farmed by its Norwegian partner, Proximar Seafood AS, at a plant in Oyama, Shizuoka Prefecture near Mt. Fuji. Badminton: Two-time world champion Momota to retire next February Two-time badminton world champion Kento Momota plans to retire at the end of Japan's S/J League season next February, sources familiar with the matter said Sunday.
