No. of centenarians in Japan up for 54th straight year to over 95,000 The number of people aged 100 or older in Japan was estimated at a record 95,119 in September, marking an increase for the 54th year in a row, health ministry data showed Tuesday. The total number of centenarians as of Sept. 15 was up 2,980 from a year earlier, with females accounting for 88.3 percent at 83,958, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said one day after the Respect for the Aged Day national holiday. Japan's Sakana AI to raise $70m from megabanks, manufacturers - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Japan's three megabanks, other financial institutions, electronics manufacturers and a trading company will invest a total of around 10 billion yen ($71 million) in Sakana AI, a startup that was co-founded by former Google researchers and recently secured funding from U.S. chipmaker Nvidia, Nikkei has learned.The new investors from the financial sector include Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. and Mizuho Financial Group, as well as Dai-ichi Life Holdings, Nomura Holdings and SBI Holdings.

Japan's ANA Holdings faces uphill battle to lift valuation - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Japanese aviation group ANA Holdings has set an ambitious goal of raising its stock price to double its book value for the first time in over a decade, though the financial blow from COVID-19 and large-scale investments stand in the way.ANA's group net profit climbed 76% for the year ended March to a record 157 billion yen ($1.11 billion), propelled by Japan's influx of foreign tourists and a strong demand for domestic travel. Singapore leads new finance system to speed ASEAN decarbonization - Nikkei Asia SINGAPORE -- Singapore is promoting a new type of finance that supports the early closure of coal-fired power plants in Southeast Asia, hoping to encourage decarbonization in neighboring countries while also developing the city-state's capital market.Called transition credit, it is based on the amount of carbon emissions reduced by closing coal-fired plants early. The Monetary Authority of Singapore, the financial regulator, is leading this initiative and working with companies and financial institutions to establish the necessary systems.

Mars meteorite found in Antarctica to feature at 2025 Osaka Expo A "Mars rock" discovered in Antarctica by a Japanese research team will be displayed to the public for the first time at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, the government said Tuesday. Found in 2000 by Japan's National Institute of Polar Research, the meteorite was determined to have been thrown into space by an asteroid impact on the Martian surface. Read full story here
