BYD's new German strategy under scrutiny after August sales slump - Nikkei Asia HAMBURG, Germany -- BYD sold just 218 cars in Germany last month, the transport authority reported on Thursday, days after the Chinese electric vehicle maker announced a revamped distribution strategy in the country.The August figure falls below July's 240, translating to a share of barely 0.1% in Europe's largest auto market. BYD said last week it was buying its distributor in Germany, Hedin Electric Mobility, hoping to expand its sales network there.

Tokyo protests to Belarus over TV report accusing Japanese man of spying Japan has lodged a protest with Belarus over a program shown by its state-run broadcaster in which a Japanese man detained by the Eastern European country was accused of engaging in espionage, a source familiar with the matter said Friday. The protest was lodged via the Japanese Embassy in Belarus after a special program about Masatoshi Nakanishi was aired on Thursday night, with the source saying the complaint cited concerns the man's rights had been violated. Seven & i conveys opposition to Alimentation Couche-Tard buyout offer Seven & i Holdings Co. said Friday it has expressed its opposition to Canadian convenience store giant Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc.'s takeover bid, saying the offer "grossly undervalues" the major Japanese retailer's value. In a notification letter addressed to Alimentation Couche-Tard, Seven & i also said the Canadian company has proposed to acquire all of its outstanding shares for $14.86 per share in cash, which could amount to around $38.7 billion. China brokerage merger to create new top dog as market flounders - Nikkei Asia HONG KONG -- Two of China's top state-backed brokerages, Guotai Junan Securities and Haitong Securities, have announced a plan to merge into what would become the country's largest player, while industry experts anticipate more consolidation.The duo announced the merger late Thursday night in filings to the Hong Kong Exchange. The union, if it goes ahead, will create an institution with total assets of more than 1.620 trillion yuan ($230 billion), overtaking China's current No. 1 brokerage, CITIC Securities, which had 1.495 trillion yuan in assets as of the end of June.

Supertyphoon Yagi forces Vietnam airport closures, including Hanoi - Nikkei Asia HO CHI MINH CITY/HONG KONG -- A supertyphoon has forced Vietnam to shutter four airports for a day, delaying hundreds of flights around the capital, while also interrupting tourist activities and factories of Apple suppliers and other businesses that have moved supply chains from China. Meanwhile, the same typhoon closed down Hong Kong's stock market on Friday.Vietnam's civil aviation authority, CAAV, said about 240 domestic and 70 international flights would be suspended on Saturday to "ensure absolute safety" and "prevent the impact of the storm on the technical infrastructure."Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha said Vietnam had to seize the "golden moment" to prepare for Typhoon Yagi, forecast to hit airports in the cities of Hanoi and Thanh Hoa, the port city of Haiphong and the province of Quang Ninh, location of the UNESCO heritage site Ha Long Bay and many large factories for companies including Vietnam's electric vehicle maker VinFast, plus Apple suppliers Pegatron and USI.

Toyota to slow EV output to 30% below previous 2026 sales forecast - Nikkei Asia NAGOYA -- Toyota Motor plans to significantly slow its production of electric vehicles, cutting its global output forecast for 2026 to 1 million cars, some 30% lower than the previously announced sales forecast for the same year, Nikkei has learned.The Japanese automaker's decision to cut EV production was prompted by the slowdown in the global EV market. Toyota has notified its parts suppliers of the decision.

India stock market regulator under fire again after Hindenburg row - Nikkei Asia BENGALURU -- India's stock market regulator has been hit by toxic workplace claims, just after U.S. short seller Hindenburg Research accused the agency's chief of conflict-of-interest over her ties to conglomerate Adani Group.The office culture allegations mark the latest headache for the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), which on Wednesday blamed so-called "external elements" for stirring dissent among employees who had complained that abusive managers "set unrealistic targets with changing goal posts."
