India's Kashmir holds first assembly election in a decade - Nikkei Asia NEW DELHI -- Northern India's Jammu and Kashmir region kicked off its first legislative assembly polls in about a decade on Wednesday, with restoration of the region's special status being one of the major issues. Voting will continue in October and results are due on Oct. 8.Jammu and Kashmir is one of eight union territories in the country, and a key region given long hostility between India and neighboring Pakistan over it. Elections come five years after the area's special status was scrapped by the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Indonesian business community stunned by chamber of commerce takeover - Nikkei Asia JAKARTA -- Indonesia's business community is reeling due to a sudden change in the leadership of the national chamber of commerce just a month before Prabowo Subianto replaces Joko "Jokowi" Widodo as president of Southeast Asia's largest economy.Businesspeople and analysts are speculating that Saturday's change at the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN), which saw Anindya Bakrie replace Arsjad Rasjid as chairman, is linked to political maneuvering by Jokowi to solidify his power base after he steps down on Oct. 20.
