China-Pakistan defense ties threatened by new U.S. sanctions - Nikkei Asia MANSEHRA, Pakistan -- Fresh U.S. sanctions on Chinese ballistic missile suppliers are threatening to disrupt Pakistan's defense ties with Beijing, entangling Islamabad in the superpowers' tense rivalry, analysts said.Last week, the U.S. State Department imposed sanctions on the Beijing Research Institute of Automation for Machine Building Industry for what it said was the company's moves to procure equipment for testing Pakistani rocket motors.

Australia secures trade deal with UAE, eyes cash for critical minerals - Nikkei Asia SYDNEY -- Australia wants investments from United Arab Emirates' sovereign wealth funds to boost its critical minerals sector, Trade Minister Don Farrell said on Tuesday after announcing the countries had completed a trade deal.Farrell said the pact, which has faced opposition from trade unions concerned about labor conditions in the Middle Eastern monarchy, is expected to boost exports by 678 million Australian dollars per year and would open the door to more investment from the oil and gas rich-state.

Vietnam to rebuild key bridge in wake of devastating super typhoon - Nikkei Asia HO CHI MINH CITY -- Vietnam has ordered the reconstruction of a key bridge ripped down in a super typhoon that left 281 dead, caused a total of more than $1 billion in damage and wiped out an entire hamlet.Northern Phu Tho province must "urgently coordinate" with the nation's transport ministry and others who will arrange funds for the bridge over the Red River, the government said late on Monday. The structure, seen collapsing in harrowing videos that show drivers tumbling with it, has become emblematic of the worst storm to hit Vietnam in 70 years.

Japan sees sharpest rise in land prices since 1992 on inbound tourism The average overall price of land in Japan as of July 1 rose 1.4 percent from a year earlier, marking the third consecutive year of increase and the sharpest advance since 1992, amid growing inbound tourism and foreign investment due to the weak yen, government data showed Tuesday. Commercial land saw a 2.4 percent jump and residential land a 0.9 percent rise, both also advancing for the third straight year and at the sharpest pace since 1992, when land prices tumbled as the country's asset-inflated economic bubble burst, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
