China's once-acquisitive Fosun unloads Thomas Cook after 5 years - Nikkei Asia HONG KONG -- Chinese conglomerate Fosun Group has announced the sale of U.K. travel brand Thomas Cook, unloading a symbolic asset purchased only five years ago as it struggles to deleverage after a rush of acquisitions.The group's Hong Kong-listed unit Fosun Tourism said the entire stake in Thomas Cook will be sold to eSky, an air ticket booking and travel business operator based in Poland, for a total of up to 30 million pounds ($40 million).

TEPCO may resume debris extraction from Fukushima reactor next week The operator of the disaster-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex said Thursday it may resume next week an operation, suspended last month due to an error, to retrieve a small amount of melted fuel from a reactor. Officials of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. said at a press conference that the erroneous placement of pipes used in the fuel debris extraction work involving contractors occurred because no one from TEPCO oversaw the preparation process to ensure the pipes were connected in the correct order. China pledges billions in fresh Africa aid despite debt concerns - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday promised 360 billion yuan ($50 billion) in financial support to African countries over the next three years, part of a diplomatic blitz that also included an offer to train thousands of military and police personnel.Speaking at the Forum of China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing, Xi made a slew of pledges covering trade, industrial supply chains, infrastructure connectivity, health, people-to-people exchanges and security. The outreach to the continent comes as China seeks to exert greater influence in the emerging economies of the so-called Global South, but the scope is likely to attract scrutiny amid rising concerns over recipient countries' ability to repay debts.
