Rule of law vital in shaping future, Kishida urges at U.N. summit Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Sunday that upholding the rule of law is essential in times when countries with different values must work together to ensure a peaceful and prosperous future. Kishida made the statement during a speech at the U.N. FOCUS: Japan criticized as treating death-row inmates "inhumanely" The inhumane treatment of inmates who have been sentenced to death has come under increased scrutiny in Japan, with legal experts criticizing authorities for giving little to no warning of an impending execution and denying those on death row basic human contact. Japan has no established regulations regarding how much warning an inmate on death row should be given before they are sent to the gallows, but anecdotal evidence shows they were informed the day before at least until the 1970s. Currently, inmates are notified just one or two hours before they are hanged. Read full story here

In Japan, some cities do - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Dozens of Japanese cities are selling metals from the ashes of cremated remains, a Nikkei survey finds, amid growing calls to put rules in place for the process.Most of the more than 1.5 million people who die in Japan each year are cremated. But while the law does cover larger bone fragments -- typically claimed by families -- the handling of the leftover ashes and who is entitled to them are still legal gray areas.
