Hong Kong jails man 14 months for 'seditious' T-shirt - Nikkei Asia HONG KONG -- A Hong Kong court on Thursday sentenced a man to 14 months in prison for wearing a T-shirt with "seditious" wording, marking the first application of the city's new national security ordinance.Chu Kai-pong, 27, had admitted to wearing the shirt and pleaded guilty in a previous appearance at the city's West Kowloon Magistrate Court on Monday. Judge Victor So Wai-tak, one of the designated national security judges appointed by Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee, ruled on Thursday that Chu's act was "really not light," as the words on his clothes amounted to advocating for "Hong Kong to be broken away from central authorities' legal administration."

Lawson to launch 'Real x Tech' convenience store with AI, robots - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Lawson, one of the three major convenience store chains in Japan, will launch a futuristic store in Tokyo next spring that will be equipped with automated display robots and a mobile device-based checkout system.The "Real x Tech" project will utilize digital technology backed by the telecommunications company KDDI, which increased its equity stake in Lawson from 2.1% to 50% for 497 billion yen ($3.5 billion) earlier this year.

Killing of 10-year-old in Shenzhen rattles already shaky Japan-China ties - Nikkei Asia HONG KONG -- The stabbing death of a 10-year-old Japanese boy in Shenzhen at the hands of a Chinese stranger is straining an already tense bilateral relationship, although the assailant's motive is not known.Yoshiko Kijima, the Japanese consul general in Guangzhou, confirmed Thursday morning that the boy had died before sunrise, despite emergency treatment at a local hospital. She said the child had been stabbed in his abdomen the previous morning while walking to a Japanese school with his mother.

Exploding walkie-talkies in Lebanon may be product of Japanese firm A Japanese communication equipment maker said Thursday that walkie-talkies which simultaneously exploded in Lebanon the previous day may have been a discontinued model it formerly sold, but with modified batteries. Osaka-based Icom Inc. said it is investigating details including its overseas distribution network, after the walkie-talkies detonated in and around the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Wednesday, killing 20 and injuring over 250 people. KKR deploys '2-step' counter to Bain in Fuji Soft takeover bid - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- U.S. private equity firm KKR decided to change its takeover bid (TOB) method for Fuji Soft to a so-called "two-step" process, Nikkei has learned on Thursday.With the completion of a tender offer from major shareholders, KKR already has the prospect of acquiring more than 30% of the outstanding shares. KKR aims to acquire as many shares as possible by creating additional TOB opportunities under the same condition.

Hyogo assembly adopts no-confidence motion vs governor over bullying The assembly of Hyogo Prefecture in western Japan on Thursday unanimously adopted a no-confidence motion against Gov. Motohiko Saito over abuse of power allegations, giving him 10 days to either dissolve the assembly or resign. After the motion was passed, Saito did not clarify which action he will take or when he will decide.
