Japan's Ishiba calls for beefed up defenses in face of regional threats - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday promised to strengthen Japan's defenses amid rising regional and global threats, including from China, while also vowing to work for mutually beneficial ties with the regional giant.The veteran politician addressed lawmakers in his first policy speech to the lower house of parliament since taking office on Tuesday. His election as prime minister by the Diet came after he was chosen as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in a vote a week ago.

Miyazaki Airport to be checked for more unexploded bombs after blast The transport ministry said it will check Miyazaki Airport in southwestern Japan for unexploded bombs from World War II after one exploded on a taxiway and led to the cancellation of dozens of flights earlier this week. "This is something that could affect the safety of flights," said transport minister Tetsuo Saito at a press conference in announcing the measure, adding he has instructed officials to consider surveying other airports, including Sendai, Fukuoka and Naha. Pakistan locks down capital as jailed ex-PM Khan calls for protests - Nikkei Asia ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan's capital Islamabad and neighboring Rawalpindi were locked down Friday with major roads blocked, mobile service suspended, schools shut and public transit offline as jailed ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan called on supporters to hit the streets.The government on Thursday evening warned it would stop at nothing to quash demonstrations as it blocked major arteries in the twin cities with freight containers. Security forces fanned out across the capital region, home to about 2.3 million, ahead of the latest in a series of demonstrations aimed at freeing the popular former leader.

Japan team seeks approval for pig kidney transplant to human fetus A Japanese medical team said Friday it has applied to obtain approval to conduct a clinical study to temporarily transplant pig kidneys into unborn children with severe kidney disease.
