Yet Chan Po-ying and her colleagues at the League of Social Democrats still hit the streets weekly despite the risk of being thrown in jail, where her husband, Leung Kwok-hung, now languishes.For Chan, much has changed since she and Leung, known as "Long Hair," were among a crowd of demonstrators who gathered near the government headquarters exactly a decade ago. The protest on Sept. 26, 2014, marked the unofficial beginning of what would become known as the Umbrella Movement, which formally kicked off two days later when organizers declared they were "occupying" the Central business district in pursuit of democratic political reforms.

Hyogo Gov. to rerun despite losing job following no-confidence motion Hyogo Gov. Motohiko Saito vowed to seek reelection Thursday despite accepting the automatic loss of his position following the prefectural assembly's unanimous adoption of a no-confidence motion against him over abuse of power accusations. Saito was given 10 days to decide whether to dissolve the assembly or offer his resignation as the governor of the western Japan prefecture, of which Kobe is the capital, in the wake of the passage of the motion on Sept. 19. I flew in from Hong Kong for a short trip to cover the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's Umbrella Movement. Organizers and participants believe it is no longer possible to host the event in the city, similar to other remembrances like June 4 commemorations of the Tiananmen crackdown.To refresh your memory, in the decade-old Umbrella Movement thousands of students and citizens took over the streets of central Hong Kong to protest Beijing's decision to deny people's constitutional right to choose their own top leaders through genuine universal suffrage. This right is written in the city's Basic Law, or constitution, which took effect when sovereignty was handed over from the U.K. to China in 1997.As the promise for fundamental democratic rights kept being pushed back, on Sept. 26, 2014, people started to surround the government building, demanding to be heard. The official start of the movement is widely deemed to be two days later, when an official declaration by the organizer called for a peaceful takeover of the business district to gain momentum in the pushing forward of their demands.

North Korea may conduct nuclear test after U.S. election: South Korea North Korea may conduct a nuclear test after the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election, a South Korean lawmaker said Thursday, citing South Korea's spy agency. Though the possibility of a nuclear test to be held ahead of the election cannot be ruled out, it is more likely to be afterward, Lee Sung Kwon, a member of the National Assembly's intelligence committee, told reporters following a briefing by the National Intelligence Service.
