Japan defense equipment outlays may ease U.S. trade gap: tariff chief Japan's chief tariff negotiator said Thursday that purchases of U.S. defense equipment may help reduce the trade deficit, suggesting it could be used as a bargaining chip in bilateral talks about the levies. Ryosei Akazawa, who met with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba ahead of a fourth round of tariff talks later this week in Washington, told reporters, "If you ask me whether (such purchases) are within the scope (of the talks), it is possible." Gas cylinder found at Tokyo explosion site expired in 1964 A gas cylinder found from a construction site in eastern Tokyo after explosions that left 10 people injured and damaged dozens of buildings nearby had a marking showing it expired on November 1964, an investigative source said Thursday. The explosions occurred on Tuesday during piling work for a new house at the site in Edogawa Ward, which had been a parking space for some 40 years. Police believe workers drilled into the cylinder, and its acetylene gas, used for welding metals, caught on fire. Read full story here
