40% of Japan prefectures offer financial aid over U.S. tariffs: poll Nearly 40 percent of Japanese prefectural governments are offering or have decided to offer financial assistance to businesses as the economy feels the impact of tariffs imposed by the United States, a Kyodo News survey showed Tuesday. Currently, 18 out of Japan's 47 prefectures have moved to offer such assistance to small and medium-sized firms as well as agriculture, forestry and fisheries operators, with nine more prefectural governments considering providing aid, according to the survey. Japan, Philippines agree to begin talks for security pacts The leaders of Japan and the Philippines agreed Tuesday on the start of discussions to pave the way for key security pacts, aiming to further strengthen their security ties with China in mind. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed at their talks in Manila that their governments will initiate discussions on an intelligence-sharing deal, recognizing "the importance of its early conclusion," according to Japan's Foreign Ministry.
