Northeastern Japan shinkansen back in normal service after incident Coupled shinkansen bullet trains returned to full service in northeastern Japan on Saturday morning, the operator said, following an incident earlier this month in which cars separated while in motion. The move marked the return of normal operations on the Tohoku, Yamagata and Akita shinkansen lines. On Friday, JR East said safety checks were completed after the incident on March 6 that affected many travelers. Read full story here

Sumo: Yokozuna Hoshoryu beats Takanosho, improves to 5-2 in Osaka Yokozuna Hoshoryu improved to 5-2 at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament with a convincing win against No. 3 maegashira Takanosho on Saturday. The newly promoted grand champion rounded out a challenging first week at Edion Arena Osaka by controlling the distance in a pushing-and-thrusting battle with Takanosho (2-5) and eventually shoving the former sekiwake over the straw bales.
