Alibaba's Hong Kong listing upgrade set to spur China money outflows - Nikkei Asia HONG KONG/SHANGHAI -- Mainland China investors have been buying Hong Kong equities at a record pace, and the inclusion of Alibaba Group Holding in the Hong Kong Stock Connect program is expected to quicken the capital outflows.The Chinese tech group on Aug. 28 upgraded to a primary listing on the Hong Kong market, a step toward being eligible for Stock Connect, which lets investors in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Shenzhen trade designated shares listed in each other's markets.

Thai stock market rallies as state-backed $4.5bn fund gears up - Nikkei Asia SINGAPORE -- Thailand's stock market has rallied in recent weeks to bring the benchmark SET Index near its 2024 high, with many pointing to the activity of a government-affiliated fund as a major factor.The benchmark SET Index rose 2.8% on Thursday, reaching its highest level in roughly five months. On Friday, it rose another 1.7% at one point, reaching a high of 1,429, nearing the year-to-date peak of 1,434 set on Jan. 4.

Quad plans Biden-Kishida send-off summit in Delaware on Sept. 21 - Nikkei Asia WASHINGTON -- The U.S., Japan, India and Australia will hold their Quad summit in Wilmington, Delaware, the home city of U.S. President Joe Biden, on Sept. 21, sources told Nikkei Asia, instead of India, the rotational chair of this year's gathering.This will be the last gathering of the current leaders, with Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stepping down soon. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will be in the U.S. for the United Nations General Assembly.

South Korea to certify EV batteries after blaze ignites fears - Nikkei Asia SEOUL -- South Korea will start certifying the safety of electric vehicle batteries under a set of regulations unveiled Friday, seeking to address growing worries about battery fires and keep the country's fast-growing EV industry on track.The move comes after an EV exploded in a parking garage at an apartment complex in August, causing hundreds of residents to evacuate. Extensive discussions between the government and the automobile industry were held after the incident.
