Nikkei wins top Japan media award for 3D visual explainers - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Nikkei Inc. has received one of the Japanese newspaper industry's highest awards for a pair of interactive, in-depth features that combine open-source intelligence with 3D visuals.It was among six prizes won by Japan's leading business daily this year, the Japan Newspaper Publishers & Editors Association announced Wednesday. The award ceremony will be held on Oct. 16 in the northern Japanese city of Akita.One of the winning features was a visual explainer published in July last year that showed how the Japanese government planned to release treated wastewater from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean.

Hong Kong economic, security pressures sour Japanese business sentiment - Nikkei Asia HONG KONG -- Japanese businesses operating in Hong Kong are feeling greater effects from a decelerating Chinese economy as well as local authorities' emphasis on national security and patriotism, a new survey shows.The latest biannual survey conducted by three Japanese organizations in Hong Kong -- the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), the local Japanese business chamber and the consulate general -- shows the diffusion index of overall sentiment was minus 12.5 for the first half of 2024, worsening from minus 9.7 in the second half of last year.

Key Thai ministers retain posts as king endorses new cabinet - Nikkei Asia BANGKOK -- Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn has endorsed a cabinet led by new Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the Royal Gazette showed on Wednesday, with key ministers retaining their posts as the government looks to boost the economy and tackle a range of other challenges.The new cabinet is expected to be sworn in over the coming days, with Pichai Chunhavajira remaining as finance minister, Anutin Charnvirakul staying on as interior minister and Pirapan Salirathavibhaga continuing as energy minister. Current Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa will keep that job.

Nikkei sinks over 4% on U.S. economy fears, 3rd biggest fall of year The Nikkei stock index on Wednesday plummeted more than 4 percent, its third-largest decline of the year, as weaker-than-expected U.S. manufacturing data raised concern about a U.S. economic slowdown. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 1,638.70 points, or 4.24 percent, from Tuesday at 37,047.61, its lowest level since Aug. 15. Nikkei 225 to add NRI and Muji owner in semiannual review - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Nikkei will replace two constituent stocks of the Nikkei Stock Average, or Nikkei 225, as part of its semiannual review, effective from Oct. 1, the index provider said on Wednesday.Nomura Research Institute and Ryohin Keikaku, the owner of Muji, will be added, while Nippon Paper Industries and ink producer DIC will be removed. Nikkei said the reshuffle is to improve the index's sector balance.Following the exclusion of two stocks from the Nikkei 225, the Nikkei 225 Climate Change 1.5°C Target Index will also remove Nippon Paper and DIC.
