BOJ keeps interest rates unchanged, weighs July hike impact The Bank of Japan left its key interest rate steady at around 0.25 percent as widely expected at the end of a two-day policy meeting Friday, as it continued to assess the impact of its previous rate hike two months ago. The central bank stood pat after it raised the target for the overnight call rate to that level in July from a range of zero to 0.1 percent in a step that added to evidence it is dialing back its decade-long unorthodox monetary easing amid signs of an economic recovery. Japan overtakes EU, U.S. as global climate leader for ASEAN, survey shows - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Japan is more likely to be identified by Southeast Asians as an international climate leader than the European Union and the U.S., a Singapore-based think tank has found.The results were published this week in the annual Southeast Asia Climate Outlook Survey by the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. It asked 2,931 Southeast Asians to choose from among eight countries and regions -- Australia, China, the EU, India, Japan, South Korea, the U.K. and the U.S. -- the one that has most demonstrated leadership in helping the world meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. A ninth choice was "none of the above."

Uniqlo sister brand GU opens first U.S. store in New York GU Co., the sister brand of the Uniqlo clothing chain under Fast Retailing Co., opened its first U.S. store in New York on Thursday, while also launching an online shop with a delivery service covering the entire country. The "GU NY SOHO" flagship store, selling clothing, shoes and bags, is located in the SoHo shopping district in Manhattan and has a total retail space of about 950 square meters, it said. Pakistan, China eye security tie-ups after deadly militant attacks - Nikkei Asia ISLAMABAD -- Beijing and Islamabad are close to a deal on setting up joint security companies to protect Chinese nationals working in Pakistan, after a string of deadly militant attacks threatened their multibillion-dollar investment ties.Multiple sources have told Nikkei Asia that the mooted deal would see Chinese security personnel working inside Pakistan, which Islamabad has previously resisted despite mounting pressure from Beijing. The agreement could also lead to Chinese nationals being ferried around in armored vehicles.

China adds security cameras around Japan school after pupil stabbing Installation of security cameras around a Japanese school in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen had been completed by Friday, as Japan called for enhanced security following the fatal stabbing of a 10-year-old schoolboy earlier this week. With authorities yet to disclose the 44-year-old suspect's motive, Chinese Foreign Vice Minister Sun Weidong told Japanese Ambassador to China Kenji Kanasugi on Thursday the attack was an "isolated incident" committed by an individual with a criminal history, according to the Japanese Embassy in Beijing.
