Japan's next prime minister: Old guard, young blood or first woman? - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- As sure as night follows day, Japan's next prime minister is expected to be whoever wins the current race to claim the leadership of the broad conservative party that has steered the country through booms and busts for 65 of the last 69 years.That continuity, though, obscures the fact that the vote on Sept. 27 to select the next president of the Liberal Democratic Party is a very different animal from previous leadership elections. It comes with outgoing Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, 67, saying the party is in the "gravest condition since its foundation" in the mid-1950s, awash in a wave of funding scandals.

Yamaha Motor president injured allegedly by knife-wielding daughter The president of Yamaha Motor Co. sustained an arm injury Monday after his adult daughter allegedly attacked him with a kitchen knife at their house in central Japan, local police said. The police arrested Hana Hidaka on suspicion of attempted murder of her father Yoshihiro, 61, by assaulting him with the weapon at around 3 a.m. Monday at the house in Iwata, Shizuoka Prefecture, they said. Titan submersible hearing reveals multiple problems before disaster The Coast Guards Marine Board of Investigation began two weeks of testimony from former employees of OceanGate, the company that operated the Titan submersible, with investigators outlining multiple concerns about the vessel before its mission started. The submersible plunged thousands of feet below the North Atlantic Ocean in search of the Titanic wreck site when it imploded, killing all five on board. NBC News' Tom Costello has more.
