7-Eleven owner says bid by Couche-Tard undervalues its potential - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Japan's Seven & i Holdings, owner of convenience store chain 7-Eleven, on Friday disclosed a letter to Alimentation Couche-Tard in which it says a proposed takeover by its Canadian peer is "opportunistically timed and grossly undervalues our standalone path and the additional actionable avenues."Seven & i said the company's board had unanimously concluded that "the proposal is not in the best interest of 7&i shareholders and other stakeholders," responding to Couche-Tard's bid "to acquire all outstanding shares of Seven & i for $14.86 per share in cash."

Japan's rice demand rises amid record tourist numbers - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- The demand for rice in Japan has increased for the first time in a decade, driven by a record number of tourists as well as strong domestic demand, leading to a shortage and purchase restrictions.The rare growth in demand, along with a harvest hurt by a heat wave, caused bags of rice to disappear from some supermarkets. Distributors have moved to hike the price of Japan's staple food.

U.S. implements new export curbs on advanced chips and quantum tech - Nikkei Asia TAIPEI/TOKYO -- The U.S. is implementing new export controls on chipmaking equipment and quantum computing technologies as it continues efforts to curb China's advances in such fields.The Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) on Thursday published the new rules, which become effective immediately although there is a 60-day comment period open to the public.

LDP hopeful Koizumi unveils leadership bid, eager for snap election Former Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said Friday he will run in the upcoming leadership election of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, vowing to "accelerate" reforms of the party following a slush funds scandal and win back public trust. Koizumi, a 43-year-old rising star within the LDP who has been among the public's favorites to become a future Japanese leader, said he will dissolve the House of Representatives "as soon as possible" if he is elected LDP chief and takes over as prime minister.
