Paralympics: Japanese judoka Shizuka Hangai wins 48-kg silver in Paris Japanese para judoka Shizuka Hangai lost her bid for gold on Thursday to Ukraine's Nataliya Nikolaychyk, but departs the Paris Games with a silver medal and a first podium finish in her fourth Paralympics. The two combatants in the women's 48-kilogram J1 class final struggled for domination on the mat for close to three minutes. Indonesia's economy suffers from 'long COVID' as middle class shrinks - Nikkei Asia JAKARTA -- Indonesia's economy is suffering from "long COVID" in the form of a shrinking middle class, the national statistics agency has warned, as people struggle with widespread layoffs, rising interest rates and deindustrialization.The proportion of middle class Indonesians dropped from 21.4% of the 267 million population in 2019 to 17.1% of the 289 million population in 2024, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), while the proportion of people classified as "aspiring middle class" rose slightly from 48.2% to 49.2%. Those regarded as vulnerable jumped from 20.6% to 24.2% over the same period. In absolute terms the middle class shrank by 9.5 million people.

Japan's outgoing Kishida visits South Korea for farewell with Yoon - Nikkei Asia SEOUL -- Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is set to arrive in South Korea on Friday on a farewell trip set to conclude official interactions with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, his partner in achieving considerable rapprochement between the historically rival countries.Kishida is scheduled to hold an afternoon summit with Yoon, according to the Japanese government, before flying back to Tokyo on Saturday. It's the prime minister's second trip to South Korea to meet Yoon during his term. In May of last year, Kishida became the first sitting Japanese prime minister to participate in a bilateral summit in South Korea in 12 years.
