Australia and Japan launch Pacific digital plan, boost defense ties - Nikkei Asia SYDNEY -- Australia and Japan will establish a Pacific digital infrastructure and cybersecurity initiative and expand their defense ties to include more joint training and air force exercises, the countries' defense and foreign ministers said on Thursday.The announcements followed talks in the "two-plus-two" format held in Queenscliff, south of Melbourne, building on the nations' deepening ties in the face of concerns over what is seen as China's increasingly assertive stance in the region.

Japanese firm referred to prosecutors for importing North Korean clams A Japanese fishery product importer, the former representative director of the company and two others have been referred to prosecutors over allegations of importing freshwater clams from North Korea in breach of a ban on all trade with the country, police said Thursday. The company in Saitama Prefecture and the three individuals allegedly imported 17,960 kilograms of freshwater clams from North Korea on Jan. 23, 2020, violating the foreign exchange and trade law, according to a joint police investigative team. 7-Eleven owner to tell Couche-Tard $40bn buyout offer too low - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Seven & i Holdings, the operator of the 7-Eleven convenience store chain, will send a letter to Canadian convenience store giant Alimentation Couche-Tard to inform it that its proposed acquisition price in a recent takeover offer is too low, and that competition law concerns also remain, Nikkei has learned.According to a source familiar with the deal, Couche-Tard's takeover proposal -- which was preliminary and not legally binding -- included the acquisition of all shares for just under $15 per share in cash, making the total proposed purchase price around $40 billion.

U.S. Marine in Okinawa referred to prosecutors over sexual assault A U.S. Marine in his 20s in Okinawa Prefecture was referred to prosecutors on Thursday on suspicion of sexually assaulting and injuring a woman in her 20s in late June, investigative sources said. The case comes after two other alleged sexual assaults involving U.S. servicemen became known in June in the prefecture, which hosts the bulk of U.S. military facilities in Japan. Malaysia's Petronas logs 19% profit fall on lower gas prices - Nikkei Asia KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysian state energy group Petronas said on Thursday that its net profit for the six months through June dropped 19% from a year earlier to 32.4 billion ringgit ($7.5 billion) amid weaker gas prices."In the first half of this year, the global macroeconomic environment continued to be beset by intensifying challenges," CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik told reporters after the company reported its earnings. "Political tensions, material policy changes and a fragile global economy have weighed heavily on demand and growth."

Hong Kong's major property developers suffer from revaluation losses - Nikkei Asia HONG KONG -- Major Hong Kong developers are grappling with sinking property values, as the darkening economic outlook in the city and mainland China depresses market sentiment.Sun Hung Kai Properties, one of the top four developers in the city, announced on Thursday evening that its net profit for the full year ended in June was 19.04 billion Hong Kong dollars ($2.44 billion), down 20% year on year.

Japan dismisses idea to get nuclear subs floated by LDP chief hopeful Japan's top government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi on Thursday dismissed the idea of acquiring nuclear-powered submarines amid the tough regional security environment, which had been suggested by one of the ruling party's candidates to become the next prime minister. Taro Kono, who currently serves as digital minister under the government of outgoing Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, said earlier in the day that nuclear-powered submarines, capable of remaining underwater for long periods of time, will be necessary, apparently in view of aggressive behavior by China.
