TEPCO retrieves tiny melted fuel from disaster-hit Fukushima reactor The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex said Thursday it had retrieved a small amount of melted fuel from one of the disaster-stricken reactors, in its first such attempt after the plant was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami over a decade ago. The successful extraction of the debris from the No. 2 reactor -- albeit a pebble-like substance less than 3 grams -- is seen as a key step toward the goal of completing the decades-old process of decommissioning the plant, which suffered fuel meltdowns in three reactors in the nuclear crisis that began in March 2011. Man sentenced to life in jail over fatal robbery linked to "Luffy" A Japanese court on Thursday sentenced a man to life in prison for his key role in a robbery resulting in the death of a woman in western Tokyo, suspected to be part of a series of burglaries across the country orchestrated by a man using the pseudonym "Luffy." In handing down the ruling at the Tachikawa branch of the Tokyo District Court, Presiding Judge Akira Sugawara said Rikuto Nagata "acted as the leader of those carrying out" last year's robbery that led to the death of a 90-year-old woman. Nissan to ax 9,000 jobs, cut global output as U.S. business falters Nissan Motor Co. said Thursday it will cut 9,000 jobs and reduce global output capacity by 20 percent as the Japanese carmaker's U.S. and Chinese businesses continue to struggle. Anger in Taiwan over reports SpaceX asked suppliers to move abroad Taipei says it is paying close attention to reported request by Elon Musk’s firm Taiwan’s government says it is paying close attention to reports that Elon Musk’s SpaceX asked Taiwanese suppliers to move manufacturing to other countries because of “geopolitical” concerns.Reuters reported on Wednesday that SpaceX’s request to suppliers in Taiwan’s multibillion-dollar industry appeared to have prompted some to shift locations to Vietnam, Thailand and other places.
