Japan slips to 4th in Asia-Pacific power ranking: think tank Japan has slipped to fourth place in a ranking of the most powerful and influential nations in the Asia-Pacific region compiled by an Australian think tank, falling behind fast-growing India due to Tokyo's prolonged economic stagnation. In the Asia Power Index's 2024 edition, recently released by the Lowy Institute, Japan scored 38.9 points out of 100, up 1.6 points from a year ago, while India's rise by 2.8 points gave it 39.1 points. FOCUS: Japan PM Ishiba opts for pragmatic diplomacy, no talk of Asian NATO Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba opted for a pragmatic approach in his diplomatic debut on his visit to Laos that ended Friday, avoiding any mention of his controversial proposal to create a NATO-like security alliance in Asia amid China's rise. Ishiba to mull Japan attendance at nuke ban treaty confab as observer Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Sunday he will give serious thought to the idea of Japan attending as an observer a meeting next year on a U.N. treaty banning nuclear weapons. "I have no intention to make light of it. I will seriously think about it," Ishiba, who heads the Liberal Democratic Party, said on a program with other party leaders on public broadcaster NHK, in response to a suggestion that Japan attend the Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons as an observer.
