Tears, joy from A-bomb survivors as group wins Nobel Prize Atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki expressed joy Friday after Japan's leading organization representing them, Nihon Hidankyo, was awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, with one saying it "felt like a dream." Toshiyuki Mimaki, the 82-year-old head of the Hiroshima Prefectural Confederation of A-bomb Sufferers Organizations, was watching a broadcast at city hall when the announcement was made at 6 p.m. He was so surprised that he nearly jumped out of his seat. Volleyball: Osaka Bluteon christen SV.League with win over Sunbirds Japan's elite volleyball competition, rebranded as the SV.League, opened for business Friday when the previous season's runners-up avenged a 3-0 loss in last year's final with Osaka Bluteon defeating Suntory Sunbirds Osaka 3-0 in the men's league opener. Bluteon, which competed in the V-League under their corporate sponsor, Panasonic, rode dynamic performances from Yuji Nishida and U.S. Olympian Thomas Jaeschke to win the first two sets in comprehensive fashion, 25-17 and 25-19, but had to come from behind in the third to clinch it 25-21.
