Ex-head of Japan hospital suspected of covering up murder in hospital A former head of a hospital in northeastern Japan and his doctor brother were sent to prosecutors on Saturday for allegedly covering up the murder of a patient by another patient in 2023, police said. Takashi Ishiyama, 61, and Tetsu Ishiyama, 60, the primary physician of the victim who was killed at Michinoku Memorial Hospital in Aomori Prefecture, were arrested Friday on suspicion of fabricating a death certificate that stated the cause of death as pneumonia. Dog lovers gather at canine-friendly shrine event in Kagawa Dog lovers and their furry friends gathered from across Japan to pay homage at Kotohiragu shrine in Kotohira, Kagawa Prefecture, during an event earlier this year that also included a stamp rally, pet goods market and photo spots in the shrine's vicinity. In Japan, shrines are often off limits to pets. Kotohiragu, however, allows visitors to bring their dogs along, as there used to be the practice during the Edo period in which worshippers who could not complete the pilgrimage themselves would send their dog to travel to the shrine on their behalf. Record number of online casino users detected by Japan police in 2024 A record-high 279 people were accused by Japanese police of using online casinos in 2024, more than twice the number a year earlier, according to preliminary government data, with many apparently unaware that internet gambling is illegal. Police have been able to track down more users of online gambling sites by looking at the bank accounts of the businesses handling bets in Japan, an investigative source said. But the source added the data represents "only a small fraction of the real figure," with the number of online casino gamblers estimated at 3 million. Read full story here

Tokyo Tower lit up in South Korea flag colors for 60th diplomatic ties Tokyo Tower, a symbol of Japan's capital, was lit up in the three colors of the South Korean flag -- red, blue and white -- on Saturday night to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral diplomatic ties. At the lighting ceremony of the 333-meter landmark tower, Japanese Senior Deputy Foreign Minister Takehiro Funakoshi said in his speech, "I would like to support exchanges so that the people of both countries can forge better relations."
