Japan's Shigeru Ishiba chosen as prime minister in Diet votes - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Shigeru Ishiba, the new leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, was elected the country's 102nd prime minister on Tuesday in votes by lawmakers on the first day of a brief session of parliament as he moves to establish a government and prepare for a legislative election later this month.Members of both the lower and upper houses of the Diet, where the LDP has majorities in both chambers, chose Ishiba over nominees from opposition parties. Later in the afternoon, the former defense minister, who has served in the Diet for nearly four decades, will also name a cabinet and be formally appointed by Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace.

Japan urges restraint as Israel begins ground operation in Lebanon Japan's government expressed "serious concern" Tuesday over Israel's ground incursion against the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, urging maximum restraint to prevent a further escalation of the conflict. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi called for an immediate cease-fire, stressing all possible measures must be taken to prevent civilian casualties and requesting the relevant parties to pursue a diplomatic solution. Australia cuts commodity earnings estimate as prices weaken - Nikkei Asia SYDNEY -- Australia's government expects earnings from the nation's resource exports to drop by 10% this financial year amid weaker prices for commodities such as iron ore and coal, although it says the latest round of economic stimulus in key customer China could buoy demand for key minerals.In its quarterly commodity outlook released on Monday, the Department of Industry, Science and Resources predicted the country would earn $372 billion Australian dollars ($258 billion) from commodity exports in the year ending next June -- down a touch from its estimate of AU$380 billion three months ago.
