Ishiba hopes to work closely with Trump for robust Japan-U.S. ties Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Tuesday he wants to work closely with new U.S. President Donald Trump to elevate the longstanding bilateral alliance and achieve a free and open Indo-Pacific amid China's growing assertiveness in the region. Noting that the date of a summit meeting will be fixed soon, Ishiba said he wants to emphasize to Trump the benefits of enhancing bilateral ties while each country pursues its own interests, characterizing the U.S. leader as "favoring bilateral, rather than multilateral, arrangements." Japan top business lobby urges Trump to promote investment with U.S. The head of Japan's biggest business lobby on Tuesday urged the U.S. administration under the newly inaugurated President Donald Trump to foster a business environment that promotes bilateral investment. "I hope the U.S. government will adopt policies that foster predictability and encourage businesses to invest with confidence," Masakazu Tokura, chairman of the Japan Business Federation, also known as Keidanren, said in a statement. Cargo dropped from U.S. Osprey blown off course near Okinawan island Cargo weighing 400 to 450 kilograms dropped from a U.S. military Osprey aircraft was blown off course and ended up in waters near a small island in Okinawa in southern Japan, a prefectural government official said Tuesday. The MV-22 transport plane was trying to drop the cargo onto an airfield in Ie Island during a drill on Thursday, but the 1.3 square meter container was blown off course by an unexpected shift of wind, the official said, citing an explanation from the Defense Ministry's local bureau.
