Many major Japanese firms halting commercials for scandal-hit Fuji TV A number of major Japanese companies said Monday they are following Toyota Motor Corp. and suspending commercials on Fuji Television Network Inc. as the Tokyo-based broadcaster faces scrutiny over its alleged involvement in a misconduct scandal linked to Masahiro Nakai, a male member of the now-defunct popular idol group SMAP. Along with Japan's largest carmaker, Nissan Motor Co., cosmetics maker Kao Corp. and Seven & i Holdings Co. have distanced themselves from Fuji TV, which announced Friday that it is launching a probe amid allegations that an employee played a role in the incident between Nakai and a woman. Sumo: Hoshoryu incurs costly loss to Hiradoumi, drops 3 wins off pace Ozeki Hoshoryu suffered a potentially fatal blow to his yokozuna promotion bid Monday at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament, dropping three wins off the pace with a second consecutive loss, courtesy of rank-and-file opponent Hiradoumi. Football: Kaoru Mitoma rewrites record as Brighton batter Manchester United Kaoru Mitoma rewrote the record for most goals by a Japanese football player in the English Premier League on Sunday as he starred for Brighton and Hove Albion in a 3-1 victory away to Manchester United. China executes 2 men over deadly car-ramming, knife attack China on Monday executed two men over a car-ramming in the southern city of Zhuhai and a knife attack in Wuxi near Shanghai, respectively, which left dozens of people dead last November, according to state-run media. Fan Weiqiu killed 35 people by driving his car into a crowd at a sports center in the Guangdong Province city on Nov. 11, while Xu Jiajin stabbed people at a vocational school in the eastern coastal province of Jiangsu on Nov. 16, leaving eight dead and 17 injured. Trump invited to Hiroshima for 80th anniversary of atomic bombing The Hiroshima prefectural government said Monday it is inviting U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to its capital city for the 80th anniversary of the United States conducting the world's first atomic bomb attack. "You alone, have the capacity... to lead the world toward the elimination of nuclear weapons, thereby saving humanity from the horrors of nuclear holocaust," Hiroshima Gov. Hidehiko Yuzaki said in a letter addressed to Trump sent via the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, inviting him to come to the city devastated in the 1945 bombing. Read full story here
