French Prime Minister Michel Barnier delayed a plan to bring the budget deficit to 3% by two years, for 2029 instead of 2027, targeting a deficit of 5% of GDP for next year. To get there, Barnier will implement €60 billion in spending cuts and tax hikes in 2025, according to government officials.
The plans have fueled tensions among lawmakers backing his government who are reluctant to U-turn on Macron’s mantra of not raising taxes. On Tuesday night Barnier survived his first no-confidence motion presented by the left-wing, after the National Rally didn’t support it.
