Nippon Steel promises most of U.S. Steel board will be American - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Nippon Steel said on Wednesday that U.S. citizens will make up the majority of the board of directors of U.S. Steel and that Americans will form the "core" of the company's management if the Japanese player succeeds in its proposed acquisition.The pledges came as Nippon Steel released details of how it would manage U.S. Steel after completing the pending deal, which has drawn resistance from the Pittsburgh-based company's labor union and U.S. President Joe Biden, as well as the Democratic and Republican candidates running to replace him: Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

Paralympics: Swimmer Suzuki wins 3rd Paris medal with 200 free bronze Japan's Takayuki Suzuki earned his third medal at the Paris Paralympics on Tuesday by claiming bronze in the men's 200-meter freestyle S4 class, his 13th in total at the Summer Games. Nikkei index sinks 4% in morning on U.S. economy fears Tokyo stocks were sharply lower Wednesday morning, with the Nikkei index briefly sinking over 4 percent, as weaker-than-expected U.S. manufacturing data and falls in U.S. technology shares hurt sentiment. Japanese stocks off 4% as U.S. tech stocks dive, led by Nvidia - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Japan's benchmark Nikkei Stock Average plunged by more than 1,500 points, or 4%, at one point on Wednesday, following a drop in U.S. high tech stocks and a strengthening yen.The average dived 1280.72 points, or 3.3%, to 37,405.59 at the end of the morning session. "When weak indicators come out -- in this case, the ISM -- concern for the economy rises and the U.S. interest rate decreases, leading to a stronger yen and a drop in Japanese stock prices," said Yutaka Miura, senior technical analyst at Mizuho Securities.

Himeji Castle entry fees set to be hiked for all non-local visitors The Japanese city that hosts Himeji Castle is considering doubling or tripling admission fees for visitors who do not live in the local area, officials said Wednesday, with the city backing down from a plan to only impose higher ticket prices on foreign tourists. The local government of Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, is also considering a premium ticket plan targeting foreign tourists that would include a luggage storage service and discounts at restaurants in addition to admission to the UNESCO World Heritage site.
