Indonesian coal companies go on buying spree for Western mines - Nikkei Asia JAKARTA - Indonesian coal companies are snapping up high-grade assets in Australia and North America, as better access to financing and less climate pressure at home give them an advantage over Western rivals.Golden Energy and Resources, controlled by Indonesia's Sinar Mas Group, last month completed its $1.65 billion acquisition of a majority stake in Illawarra Coal Holdings from Australian miner South32. This adds to the company's assets of metallurgical coal, also known as coking coal, after it bought another Australian miner, Stanmore SMC, from BHP and Japanese trading house Mitsui in 2022.

North Korea fires missiles toward Sea of Japan, no damage reported North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles Thursday that are believed to have fallen outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone in the Sea of Japan, with no damage to aircraft or vessels reported, the Japanese government said. The Defense Ministry said North Korea fired the missiles northeastward from its west coast from around 7:10 to 7:14 a.m., with at least two believed to have flown over 350 kilometers at a maximum altitude of about 100 km before falling off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula. Xiangshan security forum opens amid South China Sea tensions - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- The Beijing Xiangshan Forum on defense and security opened Thursday in the Chinese capital, drawing participants from countries including the U.S., as the rival powers aim to stabilize ties amid rising tensions.The Pentagon was sending Michael Chase, a deputy assistant secretary of defense for China, Taiwan and Mongolia, restoring the same level of representation seen in the past, government-funded broadcaster Voice of America reported. Last year, the report said, the U.S. was represented by lower-ranking officials, following a Chinese spy balloon incident that exacerbated bilateral tensions.

Indonesia starts construction of new rapid train line with Japan aid Indonesian President Joko Widodo attended the ground-breaking ceremony Wednesday for the second train line of Jakarta's mass rapid transit system, financed by a loan from Japan of about 140.7 billion yen ($990 million). The MRT railway -- the first phase of which, a 15.7-kilometer stretch on the North-South Line, opened in 2019 -- "has changed the face of Jakarta and Indonesia," the president popularly known as Jokowi, said during the ceremony at the site for Thamrin Station of the new East-West Line. More chip hubs needed to bolster global supply chain resilience: SEMI CEO - Nikkei Asia TAIPEI -- More semiconductor "hubs" will be needed to guarantee supply chain resilience even as major chip economies remain deeply dependent on one another, according to the CEO of global industry association SEMI.Ajit Manocha, president and CEO of SEMI, told Nikkei Asia that he also believes the industry remains on track to hit the $1 trillion mark within eight years, despite recent slowdowns. His comments come as major economies like the U.S., Europe and Japan rush to onshore chip production.

Nippon Steel meets U.S. officials to discuss U.S. Steel buyout - Nikkei Asia NEW YORK/WASHINGTON -- Nippon Steel Vice Chairman and Executive Vice President Takahiro Mori, together with U.S. Steel CEO David Burritt, met several U.S. Treasury Department officials on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the talks.Details of the discussions have not been disclosed. According to a company official, the U.S. side offered to hold the meeting, and "the visit to the U.S. by the vice chairman and others was decided in a rush." The Treasury Department oversees the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which screens foreign investment deals for security risks.
