Disney-themed Shinkansen trains to begin service in Japan from Feb. 21 Disney-themed bullet trains adorned with characters from hit films such as "Frozen" will run on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line connecting Tokyo and Osaka from Feb. 21 for a limited time, the operators of the railway and Tokyo Disney Resort said Wednesday. The "Wonderful Dreams Shinkansen," themed after Tokyo DisneySea's "Fantasy Springs" area that opened in June, marks the first special wrapping of trains running on the line in its 60-year history, according to Central Japan Railway Co. and Oriental Land Co. Doctor nabbed for allegedly hitting airport worker over missed flight A 58-year-old doctor has been arrested for allegedly slapping a female ground staff member at Haneda airport in Tokyo after missing a flight, an investigative source said Wednesday. Katsuhiko Fukuda allegedly yelled at the staff member, claiming not to have been called for the flight, and then slapped her twice in the face at a boarding gate around 8:10 p.m. Monday, causing an injury, the source said. South Korean President Yoon detained over martial law declaration South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was detained Wednesday after ignoring three summonses from a joint investigation team for questioning over his brief declaration of martial law in early December, the country's anti-corruption body said, marking the first time a sitting South Korean president has been held by authorities. Yoon was transported by motorcade to the headquarters of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials outside Seoul. Foreign visitors to Japan, their spending, hit record high in 2024 The number of foreign visitors to Japan topped 36 million in 2024 in a new all-time high, boosted by a weak yen and the resumption of flight routes to Japan following the COVID-19 pandemic, while their spending surpassed 8 trillion yen ($50.8 billion) for the first time on record, government data showed Wednesday. Foreign tourists spent a total of 8.14 trillion yen on accommodation, shopping and other expenses in 2024, surpassing the previous record of 5.31 trillion yen set in 2023, preliminary figures from the Japan Tourism Agency showed. Haneda airport seizes record 15kg of cocaine from single passenger Customs authorities at Tokyo's Haneda airport have seized 15 kilograms of cocaine from a single airline passenger, a record for Japan, they said Wednesday. Customs officers found the cocaine, with an estimated street value of 372 million yen ($2.4 million), concealed in 15 candy boxes inside a suitcase in the possession of a 25-year-old Canadian man. Chinese Premier Li welcomes visit by Japan PM Ishiba to China: lawmaker Chinese Premier Li Qiang said Wednesday he welcomes a visit to China by Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba "at a convenient time" and expressed willingness to travel to Japan for a trilateral summit with South Korea, a Japanese lawmaker said.
