Syria authorities arrest official behind Saydnaya death penalties: NGO Mohammed Kanjo Hassan who headed Syria's military field court from 2011 to 2014 and was promoted to chief of military justice nationwide was arrested in the coastal Tartus province, a stronghold of Assad's clan, along with 20 members of his entourage, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Growing speculation that plane was brought down by Russian air defenses There was growing speculation that an Azerbaijani airliner was shot down by Russian air defense system. Russia had initially said it believed the plane hit a flock of birds, but a U.S. official says it may have been struck by Russian air defenses. 67 people were on the plane, and 29 of them survived. Mother of iconic North Korea abductee says faith helped her survive Sakie Yokota, the 88-year-old mother of Megumi, who has long been the face of North Korean abductees, says faith has helped her survive the daughter's disappearance from Niigata, a city on the Sea of Japan coast in central Japan, in 1977. Life has been a never-ending struggle for Yokota as suspicions that Megumi might have been abducted by North Korea came to light in 1997 and North Korea notified Japan another five years later that she had "died," without providing clear evidence. Questions swirl about cause of Kazakhstan plane crash There are new details about what may have caused a passenger jet that was headed from Azerbaijan to Russia to crash in Kazakhstan. A U.S. official told CBS News that there are preliminary indications that a Russian anti-aircraft system may have hit the plane, which was carrying 67 people. Several dozen people died in the crash, but dozens also survived. Chris Livesay has the latest.

Japan defense budget hits record 8.7 tril. yen amid regional threats Japan's defense budget grew to a record 8.70 trillion yen ($55 billion) for fiscal 2025, the government said Friday, as the country continues to enhance its capabilities to address regional threats amid China's rapid military buildup and North Korea's growing ties with Russia.
