Golden retriever becomes mayor of city in Kyoto on Dog Day The Kyoto Prefecture city of Kameoka celebrated "Dog Day" on Nov. 1 with a charming new mayor -- a golden retriever named Maggie.Maggie, a 5-year-old public relations dog for the Kansai Guide Dogs For The Blind Association, was appointed "Mayor Dog for a Day" and took on duties with gentle enthusiasm. New alpha takes charge at monkey park in Kagawa A leadership shake-up has taken place at the Choshikei Monkey Park on Shodo Island in Kagawa Prefecture, home to about 300 wild Japanese macaques.The former boss, who led nearly 100 monkeys in Group B, one of the main troops at the zoo, was succeeded after he passed away on Nov. 10. With a new leader rising in Group A as well, the park is experiencing a generational shift. A day after the previous Group B head died, the former third-in-command overpowered the second-in-command "sub" in a battle for dominance to take the title of "tiger" boss. Read full story here

45 Hong Kong democracy activists sentenced to up 10 years A Hong Kong court on Tuesday sentenced 45 pro-democracy activists to jail terms of up to 10 years over their roles in an unofficial primary election held in 2020, in the territory's biggest national security case to date under a law imposed by Beijing the same year. Legal scholar Benny Tai, accused of being an organizer of the primary election, was sentenced to 10 years behind bars by the Hong Kong High Court, while notable activists Au Nok-hin and Joshua Wong received prison terms of six years and nine months and four years and eight months, respectively.
