Singapore's Sea accelerates digital bank push in Thai license bid - Nikkei Asia SINGAPORE/BANGKOK -- Singaporean tech group Sea is making another bid in its digital banking venture, applying for a license in Thailand after launching the business at home and entering several other Southeast Asian countries.A digital banking license typically allows the holder to operate various financial services such as taking deposits, lending and managing assets. Without physical branches, operators would offer loans with low interest rates, making it easier for consumers, especially underbanked people, to access those services.

Japan to face price hikes on 2,900 food items in October, most in 2024 Japanese consumers face price hikes in October on around 2,900 food and drink items, the most for a month so far this year, mainly due to a continued increase in raw material costs, a credit research company said Monday. The 2,911 hikes reflect a growing number of firms passing on higher raw material costs to consumers and surpass the price hikes on 2,897 items in April, Teikoku Databank Ltd. said in its report. 434-kg pumpkin wins Japan weigh-off championship This year's Japan pumpkin weigh-off championship was held earlier this month on Shodoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture, with a 434.6-kilogram behemoth from Chiba Prefecture winning the top prize. A total of 40 pumpkins were brought in from nine prefectures around the country. Bain to buy Japan's largest smartphone retailer for $980m - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Bain Capital announced on Monday that it will acquire Japan's largest cellphone sales agent, T-Gaia, purchasing the stakes of major shareholders Sumitomo Corp. and Tokyo-based Hikari Tsushin.The U.S. private equity group's total purchase price in taking the retailer private is expected to exceed 140 billion yen ($980 million).
