High levels of PFAS chemicals found at Japan defense force facilities Potentially harmful PFAS chemicals have been detected at high levels in tap water at the Japanese Self-Defense Forces' facilities in the suburbs of Tokyo and elsewhere, a government survey showed Tuesday. The five-year survey from fiscal 2020 looked into water systems dedicated to supplying hospitals, schools and other facilities, amid growing concerns over the health impact of the widely used and long-lasting substances already detected in water filtration plants and rivers across the country. Bear found under heated table in Japan home is captured A bear measuring about 90 centimeters from head to tail was tranquilized and captured Tuesday, a day after it was found under a traditional Japanese "kotatsu" blanketed table in a living room in northeastern Japan, local police said. The resident, a man in his 60s, discovered the animal with its head under the table when he returned to his home in Kitakata, Fukushima Prefecture, on Monday evening. Japan PM says he is willing to hold talks with Trump at early date Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Tuesday expressed his willingness to meet with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump "at an early date" to further strengthen the bilateral alliance. While Trump is perceived to be willing to meet with Ishiba before his Jan. 20 return to the White House, the prime minister noted that there are "various views" within the government about when would be the best time for the two leaders to meet and said, "I will choose the most appropriate timing." Japan parliament passes bills to improve political fund transparency Japan's parliament approved Tuesday a series of legislative changes aimed at restoring voter trust through abolishing "policy activity funds" that can be spent without disclosure and setting up a third-party oversight entity to monitor fund reporting. The passage of the bills through the House of Councillors came on the final day of an extraordinary Diet session that was extended by three days to allow for extra deliberations. It marked the first Diet debate since Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's Liberal Democratic Party and its junior coalition partner, the Komeito party, transitioned to a minority government following the general election in October. Sumo: With yokozuna promotion at stake, Hoshoryu focused on process Twenty-two years after his uncle approached the same challenge, ozeki Hoshoryu heads into January's New Year Grand Sumo Tournament with a shot at promotion to the sport's highest rank. Asashoryu won 25 career grand sumo tournaments, the fourth most on the all-time list, and clinched promotion as the first yokozuna from Mongolia at 2003's January meet.
