Talks on global plastic pollution treaty fail to reach agreement Countries negotiating a treaty to address plastic pollution ended their weeklong meeting in Busan, South Korea, on Monday without an agreement. The fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee brought together more than 170 countries including the European Union to address plastic pollution with a legally binding treaty, but some oil producing countries opposed plastic output curbs, arguing that the focus should be on management of plastic waste. Bear killed after 2-day rampage through northeast Japan supermarket A bear was trapped and killed Monday after a two-day stay in a northeastern Japan supermarket, police said, ending an incident in which the animal attacked a male employee and dined out in the store's meat section. The approximately 1-meter-long bear was finally confirmed as captured at the store in Akita Prefecture around 8:10 a.m., some four hours after a sensor on one of the box traps was triggered. Japan halts issuing health insurance cards, info tied to My Number ID Japan on Monday halted issuing new health insurance cards, as the government pushes to merge their functions into the My Number identification cards, aiming to increase the use of the integrated cards in a digitalization drive. To receive treatment at hospitals and other medical institutions, people who have My Number cards integrated with health insurance data will have to present them. Man arrested for snatching glasses using moped, dozens found at home A man has been arrested for allegedly snatching glasses while riding a moped with pedals, police said Monday, as the growing popularity of such vehicles has been linked to an increase in accidents and traffic violations in Japan. The police said they discovered around 50 pairs of glasses at the home of the 49-year-old man, whose occupation is unknown, and are investigating whether he was involved in other similar crimes, including the recent one in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward. Hidankyo hopes to expand antinuke movement through Nobel award ceremony Members of Nihon Hidankyo, Japan's leading group of atomic bomb survivors that won this year's Nobel Peace Prize, on Monday said they plan to highlight the devastation caused by nuclear weapons and give a boost to movements advocating their abolition when they travel to Oslo for the award ceremony. The group, also known as the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations, held a press conference in Tokyo ahead of its members' departure for the Norwegian capital. Time travel drama "Futehodo" tops Japan 2024 buzzword list "Futehodo," an abbreviation of the title of the popular drama "Futekisetsu nimo hodo ga aru!" was selected as Japan's top buzzword for 2024, the award's organizer said Monday. The drama, known as "Extremely Inappropriate!" in English and available on Netflix, depicts a physical education teacher who time travels between Japan's Showa Era (1926-1989) and the present Reiwa Era, which began in 2019, and finds his ideas in conflict with modern-day norms.
