Etsuro Sotoo becomes 1st Japanese, sculptor to win famed Vatican prize Sculptor Etsuro Sotoo on Friday became the first Japanese to be awarded the Ratzinger Prize by a Vatican City foundation for his work on the Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona, Spain. Sotoo, 71, is also the first sculptor to win the prize usually awarded to scholars that have stood out for their scientific research in theology. He has been involved for over 40 years in work on the Sagrada Familia, which is still under construction. Read full story here

Sumo: Ozeki Kotozakura, Hoshoryu set up final-day title showdown Ozeki Kotozakura and Hoshoryu are set for a final-day, head-to-head title showdown after both improved to 13-1 with solid wins Saturday at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament. Kotozakura, who turned 27 this week, will be bidding for his first Emperor's Cup on Sunday, while the 25-year-old Mongolian-born Hoshoryu, the nephew of former yokozuna Asashoryu, will seek his second title after his first at last year's July meet in Nagoya. Japan foreign minister planning China visit in late December Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya is planning to visit China in late December for talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, as the two countries seek to resume high-level bilateral exchanges, government sources said Saturday. The two sides are also considering holding a ministerial-level human and cultural exchange dialogue during the visit by Iwaya, who assumed his post in October, they said.
