2025 Osaka Expo centerpiece "Grand Ring" lit up for first time A giant circular timber roof known as the "Grand Ring" that is to be the centerpiece of the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka was illuminated for the first time Thursday in a test run. The massive structure, with a circumference of approximately 2 kilometers and a maximum height of around 20 meters, appeared to float in the evening darkness on Yumeshima, an artificial island in Osaka Bay. Japan conveys "serious concerns" to China over military activities Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani told his Chinese counterpart, Dong Jun, that he is "seriously concerned" about the intensifying military activities near Japan, as they met in Laos months after an airspace breach involving a Chinese spy plane. Nakatani lodged a stern protest with China over the violation of Japan's airspace on Aug. 26 and demanded that it not be repeated, according to Japanese officials.
