Pope meets 4 Japan students reenacting 440-yr-old mission to Europe Pope Francis gave an audience Wednesday to a delegation of four Japanese junior high school students from Nagasaki Prefecture, in a reenactment of a historical mission to Europe in the 16th century. The four students from Minamishimabara attended the event wearing "kamishimo," or ceremonial garb traditionally worn by samurai. They were simulating the "Tensho mission" involving the first Japanese envoys sent to meet the pope in Rome. Read full story here

Football: Ayase Ueda bags 1st Champions League goal, Feyenoord down Benfica Japan forward Ayase Ueda scored his first Champions League goal as Dutch club Feyenoord defeated Portugal's Benfica 3-1 in a league-phase match on Wednesday, moving up to six points from three games. Ueda, playing in the eighth Champions League game of his career, opened the scoring in the 12th minute at Estadio do SL Benfica in Lisbon after Igor Paixao raced down the left wing and cut back for his teammate to slot inside the near post. Life-sized Gundam robot statue completed for 2025 World Expo Construction of a life-sized Gundam robot statue from the popular Japanese sci-fi anime "Mobile Suit Gundam" was completed this week at the venue of the 2025 World Expo in Osaka.Hoisted by a crane, the giant statue's head was attached to its body next to Japanese toymaker Bandai Namco's futuristic spaceport-like Gundam Next Future Pavilion on Oct. 23, ready for the opening of the exposition next spring. Kneeling on one knee with its right hand extended skywards, the 49-ton Gundam statue measures 17 meters to its fingertips."The statue's posture, with one arm extended towards the sky, symbolizes reaching out to the future and paving the way to a new era of the universe together with mankind," Bandai Namco Group Chief Gundam Officer Hiroshi Sakakibara said."As people gather from around the world at this expo, we hope our pavilion will be a place of inspiration to think about the universe and the future," he added. Japan PM denies LDP covertly backing scandal-hit members in election Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Thursday dismissed the view that his ruling Liberal Democratic Party is financially supporting politicians implicated in a party slush funds scandal who are running in this weekend's general election without party endorsement. Ishiba said the provision of funds, which came to light Wednesday and drew immediate criticism from the opposition camp, is intended for use by local LDP chapters in expanding party strength, not by scandal-hit members running without the party's ticket for the House of Representatives election on Sunday. 2 arrested in suspected Japan bullet train ticket fraud operation Two people have been arrested on suspicion of using stolen credit card details to buy and resell shinkansen bullet train tickets, Tokyo police said Thursday, in what may be a broader fraud operation. Fraudulent ticket purchases via the JR Central website since January have hit 870 million yen ($5.7 million), and the two are believed to be behind some of those transactions, according to the police.
