No. of foreign residents in Japan hits record 3.5 mil. as of June The number of foreign nationals residing in Japan reached a record high of over 3.5 million in the first of 2024, government data showed Friday, as the country grapples with a labor shortage amid an aging society and declining birthrate. According to the Immigration Services Agency, 3,588,956 foreign nationals resided in Japan as of the end of June, up 177,964 from the end of 2023, with the number of specified skilled workers surging 20.8 percent to 251,747. North Korea to send 12,000 troops to help Russia in Ukraine war: report North Korea has begun the deployment of around 12,000 soldiers to support Russia's war in Ukraine, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported Friday citing the country's spy agency, saying it marks Pyongyang's first large-scale deployment of ground forces. The National Intelligence Service said Pyongyang had deployed 1,500 special forces troops between Oct. 8 and last Sunday to Vladivostok in Russia's Far East and that the dispatch of a second unit is expected to take place soon. Around 30 arrested over spate of robberies in Tokyo region Japanese police said they have made about 30 arrests as of Friday in connection with a spate of robberies and other incidents in and around Tokyo, with the suspects believed to have been recruited and instructed to carry out their alleged crimes via social media.
