Japan PM Ishiba not to broach "Asian NATO" in upcoming ASEAN meetings Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Wednesday he has no intention of broaching his idea of an Asian version of NATO during regional meetings in Laos that will mark his first overseas trip as Japan's new leader, with the vision having met skepticism from in and outside the country. During his two-day visit to Vientiane from Thursday, Ishiba will attend the "ASEAN Plus Three" with leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, China and South Korea to discuss economic cooperation and regional affairs, as well as the 18-member East Asia Summit that also involves the United States and India, according to Japanese government officials.
