Japan real wages in August down 0.6% on year, 1st drop in 3 months Japan's real wages in August fell 0.6 percent from a year earlier, marking the first decline in three months, as wage growth failed to keep pace with price increases, government data showed Tuesday. South Korea welcomes 'anti-Abe' Ishiba as Japan's new leader - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and his administration must have breathed a sigh of relief at the election of Shigeru Ishiba as leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party -- and thus the country's new prime minister -- during a hotly contested party vote on Sept. 27.Both the U.S. and China seem to have some apprehension about Ishiba's security policy due to his previous comments on the matter. However, Japan's former defense minister has gained popularity in South Korea as someone who stood up to Shinzo Abe, a former prime minister labeled by many South Koreans as a "historical revisionist" and a "far-right politician."

Japan PM Ishiba to visit Laos for ASEAN summits in 1st foreign trip   Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will visit Laos this week to attend summits related to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in his diplomatic debut as national leader, a government spokesman said Tuesday. Ishiba, who became prime minister on Oct. 1, will join some of the meetings in Vientiane involving 10-member ASEAN, China and South Korea, among others, for two days from Thursday, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Keiichiro Tachibana said at a press conference. Samsung profit falls 13% amid struggles to supply chips to Nvidia - Nikkei Asia SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics' operating profit fell almost 13% in the third quarter from the previous three-month period, as the company struggles to supply its artificial intelligence memory chips to U.S. chipmaker Nvidia. Samsung announced Tuesday that its operating profit dropped 12.8% to 9.1 trillion won ($6.8 billion) for the three months through September from the previous quarter in its earnings guidance. Its revenue rose 6.7% to 79 trillion won during the same period.

China mainland shares rise after holiday but Hong Kong index falls 10% - Nikkei Asia HONG KONG -- Dannie Li, a 30-year-old with 140,000 yuan ($19,840) in China stock funds, could not wait for the mainland markets to reopen Tuesday after a seven-day National Day break. Shares were on a government-stimulus-fueled tear before the holidays, and Li had seen enough."Once I get all my investment capital back, I will exit the A-shares market for good," she said. "The stocks should have few more days to rally. But it's proven to be a policy-driven market that I don't trust anymore."

Singapore's Vertex invests in Japanese real estate data provider - Nikkei Asia SINGAPORE -- Vertex Growth, a Singapore-based venture capital firm, has invested in a Japanese real estate database provider, a deal that highlights growing interest in the booming property sector in Asia's second-biggest economy.Together with the Development Bank of Japan, the Vertex Growth fund led a 2.8 billion yen ($19 million) fundraising round for Estie, the Japanese startup announced Tuesday. Other investors include Estie's existing shareholders, including the University of Tokyo Edge Capital, Globis Capital Partners and Global Brain.
