Some scandal-hit LDP members to be denied endorsement in election Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Sunday that his ruling Liberal Democratic Party will not endorse some party lawmakers implicated in a slush funds scandal as its official candidates in the upcoming general election, amid fallout from the scandal that has eroded voter trust. The party also decided not to permit lawmakers disciplined for being involved in the fundraising scandal on the LDP's proportional representation list for the Oct. 27 election, even if they receive party endorsements for single-seat constituencies, said Ishiba, who also serves as party president. Japan to ink LNG deal with Italy for emergencies amid supply concerns The Japanese government said Sunday it will sign a memorandum of understanding to buy liquefied natural gas from a major Italian energy company during emergencies, as concerns over energy supply grew stronger with the Russia-Ukraine war dragging on and escalating conflict in the Middle East. Japan will be able to purchase LNG from Rome-based energy giant Eni through the government-backed Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security under the deal to be inked with the Italian government, which holds a stake in Eni. U.S. fusion startup Zap Energy draws investment from Japan's Mizuho - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Mizuho Financial Group has invested in U.S.-based Zap Energy, becoming the first Japanese bank to take a stake in an overseas company pursuing a commercial breakthrough in nuclear fusion.Investment arm Mizuho Innovation Frontier joined Zap's recent $130 million funding round as the only Japanese investor. The size of Mizuho's investment hasn't been disclosed but is believed to be several hundred million yen (100 million yen equals $673,000).
