16 Japan-born crested ibises to be sent to China in late Oct. Japan has agreed to send 16 crested ibises born in Niigata Prefecture to China later this month, sources familiar with the matter said Saturday, sparking hope the transfer will help improve strained bilateral ties. Japanese-born ibises became extinct in 2003, but Japan has been artificially breeding the internationally protected species using birds donated by China, the first of which arrived in 1999. According to memoranda of understanding between the two countries, half of the offspring born through this method must be sent back to China. Read full story here

So we opened our first Veganerie restaurant a decade ago," says Sittileun Tortianchai, co-owner of a vegan chain that has seven outlets in Bangkok.For some, this may come as a surprise. Thailand is world famous for its cheap and delicious animal-based street food. There is seafood in every shape and form, stir-fried pork, roasted chicken and beef curries, and many dishes are seasoned with fish and oyster sauce or topped with dried shrimps. Vegan food is less ubiquitous. But a closer look at Bangkok's ultra-cosmopolitan culinary scene reveals a rich history of cooking without meat or fish.

Over 10% of Japan elderly to have no close kin in 2050: research The number of people aged 65 and over in Japan with no close relatives is expected to grow about 1.5 times in 2050 to make up over 10 percent of the elderly population, estimates by a research firm have found. Those without kin up to the third degree, including great grandchildren and great nieces or nephews, would total 4.48 million, the Japan Research Institute said, sparking concerns over who will act as their guarantors for hospitals and care homes and who will claim their bodies.
