Kazakhs to vote on government plan for new nuclear power plant - Nikkei Asia ALMATY -- Kazakhs vote on Sunday in a landmark referendum on whether the country should build a new nuclear power plant. But critics say the vote goes beyond the construction of an energy facility: It's also a referendum on Russian influence over its smaller neighbor.Companies from China, France, Japan and South Korea are shortlisted to submit bids, but Russia's Rosatom is regarded as the frontrunner to build a plant that could cost up to $15 billion.

Ishiba visits disaster-hit Ishikawa in 1st inspection tour as PM Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Saturday visited central Japan areas devastated by a deadly earthquake in January and heavy rain in September in his first inspection tour after taking office earlier in the week. Ishiba inspected some of the areas in Ishikawa Prefecture where heavy rain late last month flooded homes, including temporary housing for survivors of the powerful quake that struck the region on New Year's Day. Saudi wealth fund eyes raising stakes in Nintendo, other game firms Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund is considering raising its stakes in Nintendo Co. and other Japanese gaming companies to strengthen the country's entertainment business in a shift from its oil-dependent economy, the vice chairman of the fund's gaming entity said.
