New Japan PM urges ministers to craft economic steps before election Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday instructed ministers to map out a relief package designed to support households struggling with higher prices and stimulate regional economies, ahead of a snap election scheduled for Oct. 27. Japan SDF planes arrive in Jordan to ready for Lebanon evacuation Two Japan Air Self-Defense Force airplanes have arrived in Jordan for the possible evacuation of Japanese nationals from neighboring Lebanon, the Defense Ministry said Friday, amid the escalating conflict between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah. The C-2 transport airplanes landed at a Jordanian airport after departing from a base in the western Japan prefecture of Tottori on Thursday morning. People's Party revives anti-monopoly measures in Thai parliament - Nikkei Asia BANGKOK -- Nearly 200 small breweries are showcasing their beers at this week's second annual Thai craft beer week in Bangkok, a strong showing for a growing industry that is - technically - still illegal.Microbreweries and distilleries are largely limited by Thailand's stringent alcohol control law. To obtain a liquor license, they must produce at least 100,000 liters of beer per year and have at least 10 million baht ($302,000) in capital - conditions that cemented a duopoly for the country's two largest drinks companies, Boon Rawd and ThaiBev -- makers of Singha and Chang beer, respectively.

7-Eleven owner to begin selling off its supermarket business - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Seven & i Holdings, owner of the 7-Eleven convenience store chain, will begin the process of selling off its supermarket business, including Ito-Yokado, by the end of the year, Nikkei has learned.According to people familiar with the matter, Seven & i plans to begin accepting bids before the end of the year to sell a majority stake in an intermediate holding company for the Japanese retail group's general merchandising chains, including Ito-Yokado and York-Benimaru.

Miyazaki Airport to be checked for more unexploded bombs after blast The transport ministry said it will check Miyazaki Airport in southwestern Japan for unexploded bombs from World War II after one exploded on a taxiway and led to the cancellation of dozens of flights earlier this week. "This is something that could affect the safety of flights," said transport minister Tetsuo Saito at a press conference in announcing the measure, adding he has instructed officials to consider surveying other airports, including Sendai, Fukuoka and Naha.
