China economists trim GDP forecast to 4.8%, highlighting stimulus battle - Nikkei Asia HONG KONG -- China economists lowered their forecasts for the nation's 2024 gross domestic product in the latest quarterly survey by Nikkei and Nikkei Quick News, underscoring the pressure facing authorities in the country as they fight to stimulate growth.The average projection by 28 local experts on China's economy points to GDP growth of 4.8% on the year, down from 4.9% in the previous survey compiled in July. Some of the economists submitted or updated their responses after Chinese authorities last week moved to cut interest rates, bolster the property market and pump billions of dollars into the stock market, sending shares soaring. As for those who responded before the stimulus rollout, Nikkei sent inquiries on whether they wished to adjust their forecasts.

Google considers sourcing from nuclear power plants, says CEO Pichai - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Google is considering how to bring electricity from nuclear power plants to its data centers, CEO Sundar Pichai said in an interview with Nikkei in Tokyo as the tech giant searches for ways to meet the huge energy demands of its artificial intelligence projects.Google's initiative will likely reignite the development of carbon-free power sources. Toward that end, Pichai also said his company will increase its investment in solar and thermal power.

Toyota to delay U.S. EV production to 2026 from 2025 Toyota Motor Corp. said Thursday it will delay the start of electric vehicle production in the United States, with sources saying the schedule will be pushed back by several months to 2026 in an effort to ensure the quality of its products. The world's largest automaker by volume had originally planned to begin producing three-row electric sport utility vehicles at its Kentucky plant in 2025.
